On Saturday night, I saw part of Nick Pino’s “live mashup” at the Bridge Lounge. He DJ’ed with a baritone sax player accompanying him live. It didn’t quite work—the set-up invited the sax player to overplay—but the concept is one I saw done with cumbia music during SXSW and it would be great to see Pino expand it. He moved the crowd, but imagine what the party could be like with a live percussionist or two, perhaps a second turntable and another horn—maybe a horn player who can sing and/or rap, or at least serve as hype man. Remaking classic R&B or rare groove in New Orleans’ 2010 image (which involves DJs) could be really powerful.
The next live mashup night will be Saturday, June 19.
