Simon and Garfunkel were announced this morning at the t.b.a. for Jazz Fest. A friend is excited because the show promises a “deja vu moment” – something I won’t deny. But their last hit came in 1970 with “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and generations X and Y have grown up since they last added a song to their repertoire. In the time they’ve been away, the computer has gone from something that took up a room in a research facility to something that fits in your front pocket. You can do the math yourself – how many presidents have been in office since they’ve broken up, changes in the space program, world politics, and so on – to consider the degree to which they seem to come from another world. I’d imagine your level of excitement over the booking has a lot to do with your relationship to that world and its aesthetics.
