‘Tis the season, and sultry jazz singer Jayna Morgan has Christmas fever. She and her Sazerac Sunrise Jazz Band recently released its debut effort, Mistletoe & Stockings. The album features Morgan and her outfit’s “vampy, trampy swing jazz” stylings over seasonal staples such as “Winter Wonderland” and “White Christmas” and local favorites such as “Christmas in New Orleans” and “‘Zat You Santa Claus.” Mistletoe & Stockings also includes two original numbers: the flirtatious title track, which casts producer Gerald French in the role of Saint Nick and the kittenish “The Christmas Pussycat.”
Morgan, a Marrero native whose family moved to Connecticut in her youth, also accompanies Trixie Minx’s Creole Sweet Tease Burlesque Show as the vocalist for the Creole Syncopators Jazz Band. Prior to moving back to the Crescent City, Morgan studied classical voice at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She points to legendary jazz vocalists Peggy Lee and Anita O’Day for the inspiration behind her steamy, swinging style. Tune in below for a bit of holiday cheer courtesy of Jayna Morgan.
