We’re saddened to hear of the death of Teena Marie, who died yesterday of natural causes at age 54. Teena Marie played Jazz Fest this year after the release of her album, Congo Square (when she was interviewed for OffBeat by Holly Gleason), and she’s a veteran of numerous Essence Music Festivals. Her passing has affected the R&B community. Famed producer Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff said, “We’re shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Teena Marie. She was one of the most memorable, soulful and unique R&B vocalists to come out of Motown. We send our condolences to Teena’s family, the entire Motown family and of course, our dear friend Berry Gordy.” P. Diddy tweeted, “R.I.P Teena Marie. God Bless. Damn I just saw her the other day,” and Mary J. Blige wrote, “Rest in peace Teena Marie,” Blige wrote. “My Love for u is forever.”
Teena Marie was best known for “Lovergirl,” but here’s a personal favorite from 1981 on Motown, where she was the first white female performer, “It Must Be Magic.” Here are also a couple of bonus videos under the circumstances – the classic “Square Biz” and “Lovergirl.” She’ll be missed.
