Shamarr Allen is working on a new album, 504-799-8147, the follow-up to 2009’s Box Who In? The album title’s significance is that the number is Allen’s cell number. “I want my fans to keep in touch with me,” Allen says. “They can call or text about anything at anytime and I answer. They can find out where we’re playing, what we’re doing, or just say ‘Hi!’ I like being in touch with my fans and I want them to feel a part of what we do.”
He has completed the album’s first single, “Mr. Old Man,” which is Allen’s answer to New Orleans’ jazz and funk traditionalists. “They’re always trying to get me to do things their way,” says Allen. “I want to bring something fresh and new to New Orleans music. Music here has been the same for over 40 years and the older musicians try to push to keep it that way.” He is releasing the song now as a video, and he and the Underdawgs will play a video-release party Saturday at 10 p.m. at The Maison.
