On Saturday night, jazz guitarist John Scofield plays at Tipitina’s with his Piety Street band: George Porter, Jr. on bass, Jon Cleary on keyboards (and occasionally guitar), and Terence Higgins on drums. George and Jon (along with local drummer Shannon Powell and vocalist John Boutte) recorded with Scofield on his recent Piety Street album, an excellent jazz record comprised solely of gospel tunes, recorded at Piety Street Studio in the Bywater. Expect to hear many songs from the album at the show tomorrow night at Tipitina’s.

On a side note, although there haven’t been many examples of jazz guitar gospel albums, there is one classic predecessor: jazz guitar legend Grant Green’s Blue Note Records platter, Feelin’ the Spirit.
