Yesterday, Complex magazine published a list of the 50 Greatest New Orleans Hip-Hop Songs as chosen by influential rap music critic Andrew Noz. The number one song is hard to argue with: T.T. Tucker & DJ Irv’s “Where Dey At?” and its subsequent incarnation, DJ Jimi’s “Where They At?” The song cemented the “Triggaman” beat as the basis for bounce through today, and chunks of the lyrics were recycled over and over by countless local artists. Noz writes, “No local rap scene owes as much to a pair of songs as New Orleans does to its two versions of ‘Where They At.’ It’s hard to imagine many of today’s biggest New Orleans rappers even existing without this original blueprint.” Oh, and what a shining example of an early ’90s workout-vid-meets-nightclub music video.
