Unfortunately for fans of classic soul and funk, the Charles Bradley show scheduled for tonight at Tipitina’s was canceled yesterday afternoon. A note on the Tipitina’s Facebook page reads:
We are sorry to say that the Charles Bradley show tomorrow night is cancelled. Apologize for the inconvenience, folks. Here’s a message from Charles and team… “We’re very sorry to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances, we have to cancel our show in New Orleans April 17th. We love you, though, and we’ll see you soon!”
The 63-year-old singer began his career in middle age, performing as a James Brown impersonator in New York City in the late ’90s. After meeting Gabriel Roth, owner of Daptone Records, he began working with the label, eventually releasing an LP, No Time for Dreaming, to much acclaim in January 2011 with the Dap-Kings-related Menahan Street Band backing him.
In lieu of the concert, here’s the music video for his song “Heartaches & Pain,” a story about the murder of his brother.
