Girls Rock New Orleans, a week-long music-oriented summer camp here in the city, is opening its doors on June 25 for their Camp Showcase at the Zeitgeist Theater.
The nonprofit camp, which took place on June 20-24 at the Homer A Plessy Community School, featured daily workshops and music education rooted in gender equality, anti-oppression, and self expression for girls, transgender and gender-nonconforming youth in the community.
With an aim to foster creativity and social consciousness in the young minds of New Orleanians, the camp was founded based off a model originally started in Portland, OR in 2001. Now, the Girls Rock Camp Alliance has over 40 organizations all over the world.
Inspired by New Orleans’ thriving music scene, the camp hopes to boost self-confidence by introducing rhythmic culture to any young individuals who self-identifies as female and/or nonbinary.
Though the education program is based in music, no previous music experience is necessary and the camp accepts all levels of skill.
While the camp comes to a close this summer, the members will show off what they learned during the showcase, which will present the campers’ original songs.
The showcase will begin at 3 p.m. with doors opening at 2:30 p.m. There is a $10 suggested donation, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. All proceeds go toward their sliding-scale tuition and the continuation of the camp in the future.
