There are all kinds of ways to appreciate music, and beginning this week, WWOZ brings us another.
The radio station is kicking off a Sunday evening music documentary series at the Indywood Theater, and first up is Ornette: Made in America this Sunday at 7 p.m.
The film details the life of Ornette Coleman, a saxophone player and free jazz pioneer and includes interviews with his former bandmates as well as footage of the artist onstage and on tour.
Next up is Marley on May 10th, tracing Bob Marley from his roots in Jamaica to his status as international legend, followed by Latcho Drom on June 14th, which follows a gypsy family through their travels, hardships, and music-making over the course of a year.
“I’m pushing some limits here with the choice of films, and trying to build up an audience so I can be even more experimental with the programming,” said Charlie Steiner, WWOZ videographer, in an email. “For example, Latcho Drom is about gypsy music and dance and has no one famous in it, but it is one of the most stunning films I’ve ever seen, and deserves an audience.”
They will also screen three additional films during Jazz Fest:
Friday, April 24, 9 p.m.
The Harder They Come
Saturday, April 25, 9 p.m.
Monterey Pop
Sunday, April 26 9 p.m.
