WWOZ Employees, Volunteers Voice Concerns About Station’s Direction

When we reported that longtime WWOZ programming director Dwayne Breashears had resigned from his position with the station last week, plenty of readers had questions about the state of affairs at the beloved community radio stations.

It appears that NOLA.com had some questions as well, because the site has now published a piece examining the on- and off-air issues that have compelled at least six employees to leave the station over the past year. The article features interviews–most of them anonymous–with a number of current and former WWOZ employees and volunteers. Many of those interviewed express frustration with WWOZ general manager David Freedman, who they accuse of fostering a tense work environment, moving the station away from its original goal of preserving and promoting New Orleans culture, and making poor financial decisions.

The piece also includes interviews with Freedman and WWOZ Chief Operating Officer Arthur Cohen, who both claim that the station remains committed to supporting the local music community, though they admit that the nature of that mission continues to evolve as New Orleans moves into the future.
