WWOZ, the established New Orleans community radio station, will relocate to a new home. The station will move to the entire fifth floor of The Jax Brewery Millhouse building, a prime location at 600 Decatur Street.
This news follows an extended search for a new permanent home, which gained urgency after the station’s plans to move to a property at 717 St. Charles Avenue were rejected by the Board of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation earlier this year.
“This is a world-class location for our world-class station,” exclaimed Beth Arroyo Utterback, General Manager of WWOZ. This new home will offer over 7,000 square feet of interior space and exclusive use of balconies and terraces. WWOZ is gearing up to unite its entire staff under one roof. The area will also feature state-of-the-art studios for show hosts and musicians, providing room for volunteer projects and meetings.
During the renovation and studio buildout of the fifth floor, WWOZ will temporarily operate from the third floor of the Jax Brewery. The Berger Company, a partner in this move, welcomed WWOZ’s presence.
WWOZ will bid farewell to its French Market location at the end of November. To mark the departure, the station will host a celebratory Second Line led by some of the city’s prominent musicians and culture bearers.
WWOZ’s relocation to The Jax Brewery Millhouse building promises to be a significant step in its history, providing new opportunities for growth and artistic expression while preserving its commitment to New Orleans culture and music.
