On Sunday October 13, the famed New York-based series Jazz at Lincoln Center (JLC) presents New Orleans’ own Wynton Marsalis, for what will be the first jazz concert at the newly re-opened Saenger Theatre. Just two weeks into their re-grand opening, the Saenger is buzzing with acclaimed names in music, comedy and theatre. This Sunday’s show will be unique with its infusion of gospel into the big band appeal of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
A nearly 20-year veteran of Jazz at Lincoln Center and the JLC Orchestra’s musical director, Marsalis will lead 15 of jazz music’s foremost soloists in a performance of the Abyssinian Mass. The JLC Orchestra will be joined by the 70-person Chorale Le Chateau gospel choir, conducted by Augusta, Georgia’s Damien Sneed.
Don’t expect a particularly “classical” set Sunday evening though, as Wynton is the Marsalis brother known in the past to go head-to-head with Miles Davis and other pioneering icons. Coupled with Sneed’s repertoire, something tells us this show won’t be just “Sunday Mass.” The concert takes place Sunday, October 13 at 7 p.m. at the Saenger Theatre (1111 Canal Street). Tickets are available online here or at the box office. Call 504-287-0351 for more information.
