Re-united in 2010 after the loss of the their father, acclaimed keyboardist and music producer Jim Dickinson, blues-rockers the North Mississippi Allstars return to Tipitina’s this Saturday, November 23, and OffBeat is giving away a pair of VIP tickets to the show.
The band is led by frontman Luther Dickinson (former Black Crowes lead guitarist) and brother Cody Dickinson on drums. Although they formed the Mississippi Allstars back in 1996 and both pursued prolific solo and side-project careers after more than a decade as the Allstars, the Dickinson brothers reformed the core group that earned Grammy nominations in Best Contemporary Blues for their first three albums in honor of their father’s legacy.
The Dickinsons have strong ties to both the Memphis roots rock resurgence and to the New Orleans folk scene — evident influences that can be heard in their almost juke joint style, blues-infused rock ‘n’ roll. As individual artists, Luther has collaborated with New Orleanians Alvin Youngblood Hart, Shannon McNally and more, while Cody has produced soundtrack music for a half dozen films and television shows. But when Jim Dickinson died of heart complications, his verbalized wish for his sons to continue to play together was granted and the North Mississippi Allstars have been touring again together ever since.
The North Mississippi Allstars perform at Tipitina’s (501 Napoleon Ave) with special guest Lightnin’ Malcolm on Saturday, November 23. Doors open at 9 p.m. with showtime at 10 p.m. General admission tickets are $20 advance or at the door. More Info: www.nmaallstars.com
