Every morning we travel up Esplanade Avenue on our way to work, and every morning we typically stop at the light at the corner of North Rampart. There’s an historical marker there about “Faubourg Tremé” that explains how the neighborhood was the first real suburb in New Orleans and that it was the home of musicians, artists, artisans and free people of color who were–for the first time–able to own land there. It’s the setting for the new HBO series that starts airing early in 2010. Guess what? This morning the sign was GONE. It almost looked like it had been ripped off its mounting, which was no easy task because it was a metal landmark-type sign. Let’s hope the TV series producers took the sign temporarily to use in the series, and it wasn’t ripped off by someone!
