Get ready for another week of live music and cultural events in New Orleans. As usual, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Check out this week’s OffBeat Weekly Picks:
Oktoberfest (noun): An autumn festival held in Munich, Germany, in late September and early October, featuring the drinking of beer. It was a little too hot this early October in Louisiana to mark the occasion but you don’t need to put away your lederhosen and dirndls just yet. Say “Prost!” the last three weekends of the month at DEUTSCHE HAUS with traditional music, beers, and more. Tickets are available here. Be sure to check the German house’s schedule for screenings of such German treasures as The Hunt for M.
NOLA Funk Fest is happening this Friday, October 20 through Sunday, October 22 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. This is the first event for the new Louisiana Music & Heritage Experience, dedicated to preserving the state’s musical history and culture. The festival will feature dozens of local acts, from funk, to R&B, to Hip-Hop, and big names like George Porter, Jr. and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The festival will also feature a stage specifically designed to highlight up and coming local talent from Loyola University and NOCCA. For more information on this weekly pick or to purchase tickets, visit the festival’s official website.
With 450 riders, 15 floats, and 35 marching bands and dance krewes, Krewe of Boo (stylized Krewe of BOO!) has grown from a single parade into a weekend full of events. Krewe of Boo is the official Halloween parade of New Orleans and it’s no surprise that in a city known for its love of costumes and letting the good times roll, New Orleans is one of the best places in America to celebrate Halloween. This weekly pick will take place at sundown on October 21 and you can read more now.
