Weekend Round Up: Musical Charity Highlights

Benefits, tributes, and good causes abound in New Orleans this weekend.

Tonight, the House of Blues hosts Red Hot NOLA: A Tribute to Trumpet Black. The performance honors Travis “Trumpet Black” Hill, the young trumpet star who passed away last month, and features his cousin James Andrews in addition to special guests New Breed Brass Band and Partners-N-Crime & the Big EZ Band.

Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at Live Nation here for $27.

On Saturday (June 6th) from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m, renowned New Orleans vocalist Margie Perez will host a Mardi Gras bead recycling drive at Buffa’s. Attendees can donate their extra beads, bid on a fantastic “bead art” work by Stephan Wanger, and enjoy musical performances by Perez and pianist Josh Paxton.

All donations and proceeds go to the Arc non-profit organization to help provide jobs to adults with mental disabilities.

On Sunday night, right before they christen Sidney’s Saloon as the new location for their popular Monday night gig, King James and the Special Men will play a special benefit concert for iconic busker Washboard Lissa at d.b.a. to help cover medical expenses related to her recently-diagnosed throat cancer.

Doors open at 9 p.m. and cover is $10.

And if you’re further afield, Dr. John is playing a benefit concert in California this Saturday for Camp Winnarainbow’s scholarship fund. This peace-loving circus arts camp is run by political activist/Grateful Dead clown Wavy Gravy.

Come out and join in on the musical charity offerings around the city this weekend!
