After writing the song “As the River Cries” for the BP Oil Spill benefit album Give to the Gulf, Volume 2, Coleman Jernigan decided that he wanted to use music to help further with the Spill recovery efforts. “I wanted to start something that could become an annual way to help local organizations in need,” says Jernigan. Thus Warehouse Fest 2010 was born, and will take place this Saturday, October 16 at the Howlin’ Wolf. All proceeds from ticket sales are going to the United Way for Greater New Orleans and the Roots of Music organization, led by Rebirth Brass Band’s Derrick Tabb. Beginning at noon and continuing all the way until the wee hours of Saturday night, the festival will feature live music from a variety of different musicians, from indie rockers the Generationals (who have been working on a new album) to the Hot 8 Brass Band, with a lineup of singer-songwriters in the Howlin Wolf Den and others on the main stage. Tickets are $15 online or $20 at the door. For more information, check warehousefestnola.com.
The music kicks off at 12:45 p.m. with the Tangle in the Howlin’ Wolf Den. The main stage starts shaking with the Coleman Jernigan Project at 2:15 p.m. At 6:15, an interlude is scheduled between acts to show a preview of the film Old Energy, a documentary being completed by local filmmakers about the BP Oil Spill. The production team had already started working on a film about wetlands destruction when the Deepwater Horizon rig first exploded, causing the filmmakers to expand their focus to the Oil Spill disaster. The festival concludes with a set at 11:30 p.m. by New Orleans Indie Rock All Stars, a collection of members of different Indie Rock Collective-related bands, including musicians from Glasgow, MyNameIsJohnMichael and Big Rock Candy Mountain.
