This past Saturday, November 20, New Orleans celebrated the life of Walton Payton, Jr. with a memorial second line. A New Orleans native, Payton played bass and sousaphone for several famous outfits, including the Young Tuxedo Brass Band, Olympia Brass Band, and most recently the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Payton also taught music in New Orleans public schools for 25 years. Below are highlights of photos from Saturday’s memorial service at Preservation Hall and the second line that followed in the French Quarter. All photos were taken by Kim Welsh.
