Video: Zigaboo Modeliste joins Vulfpeck for a few tunes in San Francisco

Vulfpeck have been steadily building a fanbase over the past few years with their technically masterful approach to funk music. Founded by University of Michigan music students in 2011, the group is essentially a superb rhythm section whose approach to funk takes more from classic session players like Muscle Shoals’ Swampers than New Orleans acts like The Meters.

Nevertheless, Vulfpeck’s relatively minimalist, primarily instrumental sound has found a fan in The Meters’ own Zigaboo Modeliste, who joined them for a few tunes during their show at The Fillmore in San Francisco last night. Modeliste—who has called the Bay Area home for a number of years—kicked off his sit in with a rendition of The Meters’ “Cissy Strut.” Vocalist and Vulfpeck collaborator Antwaun Stanley then joined the fray for Vulfpeck’s own “1612” and a cover of Bill Withers’ “Use Me.”

Ted Silverman captured some videos of the collaboration.
