I’m not old enough to remember a time when “cha-ching” was a catchphrase for the New Orleans Saints, or even a time when Seth Green wasn’t at least a little bit famous.
I am, however, old enough to remember a time when the Saints were a thoroughly underwhelming football team. So I can only imagine how excited the people of New Orleans were when the team went 11-5 in 1991, earning their first-ever division title in the NFC West. It must have been a thrilling time for Saints fans, who didn’t have much to celebrate during the organization’s previous 24 years of existence.
I’m not sure that excitement justifies turning a fast food commerical slogan into a rallying cry, but I suppose lyrics from an Atlanta rap song aren’t any better (“stand up and get crunk,” anyone?).
Regardless, it was pretty satisfying to come across this blast from the past: a WVUE news report on 17-yer-old Seth Green’s 1991 trip to the Superdome. As the star of Rally’s Hamburgers’ popular “cha-ching” commercials, Green was the inspiration for the Saints’ catchphrase and, apparently, something of a local celebrity.
Yes, it’s interesting stuff. Even more interesting is the fact that Rally’s managed to increase their sales by 22% during the 1991 season. Green’s career would also take off a number of years later, once again proving that no one should ever underestimate the power of cross-promotional advertising.
