New Orlean’ own Dumpstaphunk have developed a supremely funky reputation on account of Tony Hall and Nick Daniels’ double bass action. But the band took that style to the next level when they invited Phish bassist Mike Gordon to join them on stage at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver last night (though Tony Hall took up electric guitar for the tune).
Gordon, who was in town for Phish’s three-night run at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Arena, joined Dumpstaphunk on stage for a jammed out rendition of Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch,” a tune that has been in the Phish repertoire for 30 years. The collaboration was not entirely unexpected, as the artists have performed together in Denver on a few occasions during Phish’s annual Labor Day run.
Dumpstaphunk are the second New Orleans act to collaborate with a member of the popular jam band in the last week. On Saturday afternoon, Anders Osborne performed Grateful Dead tunes with Phish’s Page McConnell and Jon Fishman, as well as the Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead.
