Sturgill Simpson was joined by a sizable backing band when he took the stage at the 59th annual Grammy Awards last night. The Dap Kings, a number of string musicians and a few background vocalists were among the artists who augmented the country music maverick’s stunning rendition of “All Around You,” a track from his Grammy-nominated album A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.
Of particular interest to us is the trio of New Orleans-based horn players who have been touring with Simpson for much of the past year, and who also performed with him at yesterday’s ceremony. Saxophonist Brad Walker, trumpeter Scott Frock (King James and the Special Men, Delfeayo Marsalis) and trombonist Jon Ramm (Magnetic Ear) can all be seen in the second row of the horn section—just behind the Dap Kings—where they added another layer of intensity to Simpson’s intriguing country arrangements. Walker even got a chance to show off his chops on a blistering solo that was arguably the highpoint of the number.
“It’s a dream come true to get to tour the world with one of the most compelling artists working in music right now,” Walker told OffBeat earlier this month. “It’s nice to see someone who has done everything right since the moment he stepped into the music scene—and who is completely honest in everything he does and says—get acknowledged by the biggest platform in music.”
Simpson’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth ended up taking home a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. The LP was nominated for Album of the Year as well, but lost out to Adele’s 25.
