Video: Jimmy Fallon, Sia, The Roots and Natalie Portman Cover “Iko Iko”

“Iko Iko” has long been a favorite cover for musicians from New Orleans and beyond. Originally released as “Jack-A-Mo” by Sugar Boy and his Cane Cutters in 1953, the tune has since been reimagined by numerous artists. The most recognizable version of the song–The Dixie Cups’ 1965 hit–was itself a reworking of the original “Jack-A-Mo.” Other notable renditions have been recorded by Dr. John, the Belle Stars, Natasha England and the Neville Brothers, among others. The track was even a live staple for jam band titans the Grateful Dead, who teamed up with the Nevilles for a cover back in 1988.

Comedian and talk show host Jimmy Fallon is the latest performer to get into the “Iko Iko” game. Last Night’s episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon found him joining forces with Australian singer Sia, actress Natalie Portman and The Roots for a faithful–if a tad bizarre–rendition of the New Orleans classic. Their ensemble cover, which you can watch below, incorporates various non-traditional percussion instruments like the “deck of cards,” “cue ball & 8 ball” and “plastic paint bucket.”
