Branford Marsalis is an undisputed member of New Orleans’ first family of jazz but the saxophonist can also claim another illustrious musical title: that of Grateful Dead collaborator.
Beginning with his legendary sit in at the Nassau Coliseum on March 29, 1990, Marsalis developed a music rapport with the iconic jam band that included multiple guest appearances between 1990 and 1994. That first show, in particular, holds a special place in Grateful Dead lore, eventually being immortalized in the 2014 live album Wake Up to Find Out.
A 1996 interview with Marsalis, in which he discusses his thoughts on the Grateful Dead and its indomitable frontman Jerry Garcia (who died the previous year), has recently surfaced on YouTube. The video appears to be from an episode of Four on the Floor, a mid-90s VH1 series that featured round-table discussions with music critics Anthony DeCurtis, Scott Poulson-Bryant, Amy Linden and JD Considine.
In the clip, Marsalis expresses his respect for the band and its fans while also noting that they weren’t exactly in top form all of the time. Hat Tip to JamBase for pointing out the video, which you can check out below:
