A few months before he passed away at the age of 77, Allen Toussaint took the stage at Maryland’s Merriweather Post Pavilion for Dear Jerry: Celebrating the Music of Jerry Garcia.
The one-night concert event was a pretty star studded affair, with appearances from all of the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, plus Peter Frampton, Buddy Miller, Eric Church, Grace Potter, Jimmy Cliff, Jorma Kaukonen, Widespread Panic, Los Lobos and many more.
Fans of Garcia’s work were not surprised by Toussaint’s choice of tribute tunes. Like so many other classics of American music, the Jerry Garcia Band favorite, “Get Out of My Life, Woman,” was actually penned by the New Orleans icon (Lee Dorsey recorded the original in 1965).
