The University of New Orleans will host a screening of the documentary ELLIS: The Life and Complicated Times of Pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr. Directed by Sascha Just, this documentary sheds light on the life and contributions of late jazz pianist, composer and educator Ellis Marsalis Jr.
The event will take place on Friday, October 6, at 4 p.m. in the University of New Orleans’ Performing Arts Center Recital Hall.
Ellis Marsalis Jr., known for his significant role in founding the UNO Jazz Studies program and often referred to as one of the most influential jazz figures in recent years, is the subject of this documentary, which aims to provide a comprehensive look at his life and career.
The evening will commence with a meet and greet reception with director Sascha Just at 4 p.m., offering attendees an opportunity to interact with the filmmaker before the screening.
The screening of ELLIS will begin at 5 p.m., featuring rare historical footage and recordings of his final live performances.
Following the screening, at 6:30 p.m., a Q&A session will occur with director Sascha Just and musician Derek Douget as well as Ellis Marsalis III, offering insights into the documentary’s creation and its significance in celebrating Ellis Marsalis’ legacy.
The documentary also incorporates personal reflections from Ellis Marsalis’ sons, including Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo, Ellis III and Jason, along with contributions from actor Wendell Pierce, providing viewers with a personal perspective on the jazz legend’s life and work.
