“Uncle Lionel” Batiste, a beloved member of the music community and percussionist with the Treme Bass Band, passed away this morning, at the age of 80, after a brief battle with cancer. He died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform the New Orleans community of the passing of our beloved “Uncle Lionel” this morning at Ochsner Hospital. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones and transitioned peacefully. The family wishes to extend its deep gratitude for the kindness and love shown during his illness. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but it’s expected that a memorial will take place at the Mahalia Jackson Performing Arts Center this week, and the Treme Brass Band will dedicate its Wednesday night gig at the Candlelight Lounge to “Unck.”
A memorial fund has been set up, and donations can be made at any Liberty Bank & Trust branch.
The New Orleans Multicultural Tourism Network (NOMTN) announced that it will donate $10 of every Tremé 200 poster sold to aid with the late Uncle Lionel Batiste’s medical costs, family expenses and his funeral. Uncle Lionel was chosen asthe “face” of the Tremé Bicentennial and is prominently featured on the commemorative poster, which was produced in Faubourg Tremé.
“I can think of no better way to help a member of our community who has dedicated his life to entertaining locals and visitors alike,” Toni Rice, President of the New Orleans Multicultural Tourism Network said. “Uncle Lionel was one of kind and represented the very essence of New Orleans,” she added.
Uncle Lionel grew up in Tremé across the street from Craig School. He began his music career at the age of 11 playing bass drum with the Square Deal Social & Pleasure Club. He spent his career entertaining audiences and inspiring young musicians at home and around the world.
