Award-winning singer-songwriter Judith Owen is set to launch her latest venture, Unapologetically Judith Owen, a podcast paying homage to the fierce and uncompromising women of 1940s’ and 1950s’ jazz and blues. Timed perfectly for International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, the podcast will debut on March 1st, offering listeners a deep dive into the lives and legacies of overlooked musical trailblazers.
The podcast serves as a companion piece to Owen’s acclaimed album Come On & Get It, which celebrates the music of artists like Nellie Lutcher, Julia Lee, and Blossom Dearie. With almost 2 million album streams, over 75,000 video views, and glowing reviews from publications like The Times and Jazzwise, Come On & Get It has captivated audiences worldwide with its joyous homage to these unsung heroines.
Owen’s passion for these women and their unapologetic attitudes drives the creation of the podcast. “It simply wasn’t enough to just sing these incredible women’s fierce songs,” she explains. “I had to talk about them, too. Talk and tell EVERYONE how these amazing women changed my life – and how they could change yours, too!”
Unapologetically Judith Owen, produced by Pineapple Audio Production, promises a 10-part series filled with discussions on topics ranging from sexual empowerment to the power of saying “no” to the importance of being unapologetic in every aspect of life. Owen will be joined by journalist and broadcaster Bibi Lynch, known for her work with BBC, Soho Radio, and The Guardian, among others, as they delve into the complexities of these pioneering musicians and their enduring influence.
“These women didn’t tolerate racism or ageism,” Owen emphasizes. “They sang in their 80s, they fronted male bands, they sang filth! ‘Big Long Slidin’ Thing,’ anyone? The album celebrates their music, and the podcast celebrates their badass attitudes and unapologetic nature. That’s what Unapologetically Judith Owen is all about – showcasing the power of being unapologetic.”
Through engaging conversations and insightful reflections, Unapologetically Judith Owen promises to shine a light on these remarkable women and the profound impact they had on music and society. As Owen eagerly anticipates the podcast’s launch, she invites listeners to join her on this inspiring journey of discovery.
“Hearing these women as a kid, I thought they were fun, ballsy, sexy, and powerful,” Owen recalls. “And now? Now I’m so impressed by what they stood for and what forces they were. Come On & Get It was an uplifting, empowering project – but Unapologetically Judith Owen is in a different league. I cannot wait for people to hear it.”
Stay tuned for the launch of Unapologetically Judith Owen on March 1st.
