On December 4, Ty Segall used the platform of musical guest on Conan O’Brien’s TBS talk show to announce the release date of his newest album, Freedom’s Goblin.
As the lights on the set dimmed cuing Segall to begin, he leaned into the microphone and prefaced his performance with “this is about my dog, Fanny” before belting out in a strident melody of guitars, keyboards, drums, saxophones and trumpets which may lead you to wonder how such a garage-rock tune could remind anyone of a dog.
Such is the character of Segall, though. His on-stage antics have garnered crowds just as much as the merit of his music has, and he embraces many personas wherever he preforms. During a 2016 performance at One Eyed Jacks Segall mimicked an array of different personalities, including a ‘moody baby’ and what resembled a garage-rock version of the Grim Reaper. He is no stranger to crowd surfing or being shirtless to the point where you can almost expect it during any given performance, and the crowd certainly never seems to mind.
In 2018, Segall and his music will return to New Orleans on the last leg of his North American tour, taking to One Eyed Jacks once again on April 22. Tickets for the 18+ event are available here for $22.
Freedom’s Goblin, his yet-to-be released album, will include 19 tracks and is due out on Drag City on January 26. The full track listing is as follows:
