Treat yourself to a sublime night of jazz music and give back to the community? Yes, please! Mark your calendars because the annual Tunes for Toys event is coming up on Thursday, December 21, at 7 p.m. For the fourth year in a row, the Trombone Shorty Foundation is teaming up with the Gia Maione Prime Foundation and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation to put on a free jazz concert and toy drive at the George & Joyce Wein Jazz and Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart St). Attendees are encouraged to donate a new toy as their ticket for concert admission.
This year’s lineup will feature dazzling performances from New Breed Brass Band, the students of the Trombone Shorty Academy and Trombone Shorty himself. Local-turned-international jazz star, Troy Andrews, a.k.a Trombone Shorty, never stops sowing the seeds of his homegrown NOLA roots despite reaching new levels of fame. In 2015, Shorty teamed up with WWOZ 90.7 FM to have his students perform on a live radio broadcast. This December, his Foundation willy ring in its annual “Tunes for Toys” by celebrating the accomplishments of Academy students. The event is a special time for New Orleanians to come together during the holiday season and give back to the city’s musical traditions.
Your personal donation will go directly as a holiday gift to children from the historic Treme neighborhood. Donations can be dropped off at Whole Foods (300 N. Broad St) between November 24 and December 22, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
