Troy Davis Wins 2025 Alvin Batiste Award

The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge has announced that celebrated jazz drummer Troy Davis will be honored with the esteemed Alvin Batiste Award. The recognition will take place during the highly anticipated River City Jazz Masters event, featuring acclaimed percussionist Sammy Figueroa, on Thursday, May 1 , at 7:30 p.m. at the Manship Theatre.

This prestigious award pays tribute to Davis’ remarkable contributions to jazz and his enduring impact on the genre. With a career spanning over three decades, Davis has collaborated with jazz legends such as Betty Carter, Roy Hargrove, Terence Blanchard and Monty Alexander. His artistry and dedication have established him as a leading figure in jazz drumming.

Named in honor of the late clarinetist and educator Alvin Batiste—an iconic presence in Louisiana’s jazz scene—the Alvin Batiste Award recognizes individuals who have made significant lifetime contributions to the cultivation and promotion of jazz music in Louisiana. Past honorees include Zia Tammami (2017), Johnny Vidacovich (2019), Herman Jackson (2021), Donald Harrison (2022), Mike Esneault (2023), and Branford Marsalis (2024).

The event will not only celebrate Davis’ incredible achievements but also showcase the brilliance of Sammy Figueroa. A world-renowned percussionist, Figueroa has performed with a star-studded list of artists, including Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, David Bowie, Chaka Khan and Mariah Carey. His mastery of percussion and ability to blend jazz, Latin, and other musical styles promise an unforgettable performance.
