Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews has signed with renowned jazz label Blue Note Records. The New Orleans icon plans to release his debut with the label this April ahead of his festival-closing performance at Jazz Fest.
Shorty’s last full-length album, Say That to Say This, was released in 2013 via Verve Records, which also put out 2010’s Backatown and his 2011 effort For True.
Shorty and his band Orleans Avenue have been on the road opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers for much of 2017. He even joined the rockers on stage for show-stopping collaboration during their New Orleans concert, which also featured appearances by the Rebirth Brass Band, George Porter Jr. and Ivan Neville.
As noted, Shorty and co. will once again close out Jazz Fest’s Acura Stage when the annual extravaganza wraps up on Sunday, May 7. It’s a coveted slot that has historically been bestowed upon New Orleans music royalty like the Neville Brothers and Professor Longhair.
