When it comes to New Orleans musical families, few names ring out as loud as Neville. The clan began their storied run as NOLA royalty in 1977, when Charles, Aaron, Cyrill and Art Neville (who previously played keyboard for Allen Toussaint’s legendary house band, The Meters) joined to form The Neville Brothers, a genre-defining soul-funk supergroup that stuck around for 35 years before formally disbanding in 2012. Now, the crew will tip their hats to another New Orleans music staple, Tipitina’s, at the venue’s 40th anniversary celebration event, Neville Family Groove.
Both the venue and the family remain prevalent on the scene; Art still plays with George Porter Jr. in their Meters’ reboot, The Funky Meters, and Ivan and Ian (sons of Aaron and Art, respectively) have formed their own band, Dumpstaphunk, now a local staple. Ivan can also be seen at his new residency, Ivan Neville’s Nola Nites, at the Ace Hotel. The next installation will happen on November 27. Tipitina’s is responsible for some of the most varied, exciting shows in town.
On Friday, Nov. 24, Ivan, Cyril, Charles, Ian, Jason (Aaron’s son) and Omari (Cyril’s son) will reunite at Tipitina’s to celebrate 40 years as the first name in funk. The show will feature special guests Big Chief Juan Pardo, The Fuel and DJ Soul Sister, who will kick the party off with her signature rare grooves. Tickets are on sale now, starting at $28.50.
