Established in 1977, Tipitina’s has become a  household name for any New Orleans music-loving resident. First beginning as a neighborhood juke joint, the venue has grown into a music venue that brings in some of New Orleans’ best local acts! Tipitina’s was created by a group of young music fans (The Fabulous Fo’teen) as a place for Professor Longhair, one of New Orleans’ most famous rhythm and blues musicians, to perform in his final years. “Tipitina” was one of Longhair’s most complex songs and has continued to be remembered through the name of the New Orleans now famous music bar.

Henry Roeland Byrd, or known on stage as Professor Longhair, was known for his ability to fuse rhumba rhythms with boogie-woodie, blues and southern R&B. Many of his original compositions are apart of many New Orleans traditions and long historical events without most people knowing such as his “Mardi Gras in New Orleans,” which plays each year as the soundtrack to Carnival. New Orleans music prodigies such as Dr. John, The Meters, the Neville Brothers, Allen Toussaint and more have found inspiration from Professor Longhair, making him one of the biggest influencers of New Orleans’ music since the 1950s.

By constantly representing the name of a musical legend, Tipitina’s has continued to put on some of New Orleans’ best shows.
