New Orleans’ “official unofficial” independent film festival, Timecode:NOLA’s “FF” series released their complete 2013 schedule last week, and the silver screen selections include several intriguing titles. Aptly dubbed “FF2,” since this year will be their second producing a full-blown convening of both rising and amateurs filmmakers here in the Crescent City, what sets Timecode:NOLA’s festival apart from many others is its unique weaving of on-site participation from attendees in various aspects of filmmaking.
Timecode:NOLA is a collective of local and regional filmmakers that present works and host workshops year-round in town, but they also invite aspiring filmmakers to participate in their on-going challenges and group projects, such as their Super 8 and film shorts calls for submissions. This year’s local film shorts challenge will culminate at FF2 in the form of one collaborative feature length film entitled, “Where Y’at? (hello.) / Humidity” (aka “the best 15 short stories told by 15 filmmakers in one hot-ass city”), to make its debut screening on Saturday, September 21, 10 p.m. at One Eyed Jacks.
Other activities on this year’s Timecode:NOLA Film Festival program that pique interest also include an entire track of workshops, tool booths and more for skateboarding filmmakers, and the launch of the Timecode collective’s first ever “home movie archive.” It is refreshing to see a film festival focus more on nurturing local film talent, rather than compete to screen the most, the rarest, or the best films from other places.
