New Orleans’ rising indie filmmakers collective, Timecode:NOLA (the crew that curated the first Louisiana music films series at French Quarter Fest this past spring, and the eccentric One Reel Super 8 Contest Extravaganza in 2011) proves again this year that its annual film fest is indeed more than just your typical movie-watching marathon with the announcement of its 2013 Film Fest 2 (FF2) dates and program overview for September 19 – 22.
Dubbed by many as the “Unofficial New Orleans Film Fest,” the Timecode annual converging might be wavering on more official territory this year. FF2 guests will not just watch new independent films from local and international filmmakers this fall, but will engage is industry panels, workshops and even a skateboard filmmaking symposium and tools marketplace. Timecode will also premiere the second installment of its “Joint Picture Project” feature film.
The Joint Picture Project is Timecode’s original collective film project launched last year at their inaugural local film festival. Any local filmmaker can make a five-minute film throughout the months leading up to festival deadline, based on an assignment from Timecode that is uniquely New Orleans, say the rules. The best 15 shorts are then edited into a single feature film that not only premieres at the forthcoming FF, but also goes on to screen around the world. This feature of the Timecode:NOLA film fest program certainly stands out from many other similar fests. There might be attendee interaction at a lot of film festivals and conferences, but few challenge budding filmmakers to actually create a short in time for the fest and then knit them into a feature length premiere on-site.
Parties, live music and art installations are weaved between the 100 films that will screen over four days at seven different New Orleans venues during FF2 in September. Moreover, Timecode’s film festival seems very accessible to beginner or amateur filmmakers, perhaps engaging all levels more intimately.
Timecode:NOLA will release its complete program line-up in the coming weeks, but in the meantime teases us with this year’s trailer for the Joint Picture Project film, entitled “Where Y’at? (hello.).” Watch below:
