Throwback Thursday: The Radiators on Late Night with Conan O’Brien

A little more than 20 years ago, the Radiators spent the night in a meat locker with Jamie Farr, Gilbert Gottfried, Andy Richter, and Conan O’Brien.

The Radiators on the cover of OffBeat in 1997.

While that may sound like the beginning of a cautionary tale from an episode of Behind the Music, it actually happened in 1994 after the godfathers of New Orleans rock performed their hit “Smokin’ Hole” on the then baby-faced O’Brien’s talk show.

To end the show in a way only he could, O’Brien had flowers handed out to that night’s “cast” of guests, which included the Rads, Farr, Gottfried, and an actor introduced as “Scott Berkley,” who had played the part of Andy Richter, as each cast member exited a meat locker set.

Yes, they were standing in a meat locker with Klinger from MASH and the voice of the Aflac duck.

No, there doesn’t seem to be a reason for that.

Check out the video of the performance and memorable exit below. The meat locker part starts four minutes in.
