For this edition of Throwback Thursday, we’re digging deep into the YouTube vaults to unearth a video of Dr. John introducing the Meters in the 1970s. Most of us here in New Orleans are still in a post Mardi Gras funk that will soon wear off, but this video captures some uniquely New Orleans funkiness that has stood the test of time.
After a brief and epic introduction from the always entertaining Dr. John, the Meters start things off with “Look-Ka Py Py” from their 1969 album of the same name. About three minutes in, Zigaboo Modeliste leads the band in an extremely funk change up as they transition into “Jungle Man,” a track from their then-newly released 1974 classic, Rejuvenation.
So take a break from your day to enjoy this small sample of what made the Meters so great. Your day is about to get a whole lot funkier.
