New Orleans-based nonprofit Court 13 presents the third annual Always For Pleasure Fest this month and with it continues its pledge to give the city’s wild and innovative art a massive platform. The organizers of the event are best known for the 2012 Oscar-nominated film Beasts of the Southern Wild, and the movie’s thematic perspective lives on through the week-long festival. Dedicated to pleasure in various forms, AFPIII will consist of five days of movies, music, art, and performance.
This year’s fest will be held in two locations; on November 16, 17 and 18, it will take place at the Court 13 Arts HQ located at 2801 Franklin Ave.; and at the Orpheum Theater on Nov. 20 and 21.
Events at the Court 13 Arts HQ will showcase new installations from the Court 13 Artists-in-Residence Abigail Smithson, Rontherin Ratliff, and Read More, as well as work from Artsumex, the Tultepec, Mexico based arts collective featured in the film Brimstone & Glory.
Film screenings will include works from New Orleans and beyond, including senior class projects from students at NOCAA. The Third Horizon Caribbean Film Festival will present a special selection of work from Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, and Trinidad & Tobago. WWNO’s Bring Your Own, a live unscripted storytelling event, will feature story tellers from the surrounding neighborhood.
Saturday the 18th will be the culminating party event. Guests will be take part in the world’s only known Karaoke Second Line Parade. The Slow Rollas Brass Band will perform and Jen Goma will put on a special live show on the theme of pleasure. Deviation will present a series of short plays also on the theme of pleasure, and documentarian John Wilson will auction off his failed TV pilot to the lowest bidder. There will be additional karaoke in multiple locations. DJs Rusty Lazer, Indian Roastfish and many more will will keep the party moving late into the evening.
On November 20 and 21, AFP will travel to the Orpheum Theater for two nights of film screenings. The second night of film screenings will present Court 13’s own Brimstone & Glory, Viktor Jakovleski’s Mexico-fireworks-dreamscape-
