James Carter (born January 3, 1969) is an American jazz musician widely recognized for his technical virtuosity on saxophones and a variety of woodwinds. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Carter learned to play under the tutelage of Donald Washington and became a member of his youth jazz ensemble, Bird-Trane-Sco-NOW!!
In 1988, Carter’s career took a pivotal turn when he played alongside guest artist Lester Bowie at the Detroit Institute of Arts, leading to an invitation to perform with Bowie’s quintet in New York City. Since then, Carter has been a prominent performer and recording artist on the jazz scene, known for embracing all elements of jazz history, from dixieland to free jazz.
Carter has collaborated with numerous jazz legends and has won DownBeat magazine’s Critics and Readers Choice award for baritone saxophone multiple times. He is also an authority on vintage saxophones, owning an extensive collection of such instruments.
