“THE PRECIPICE”: Louisiana Public Broadcasting Screens a Documentary on the Struggle of Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe

Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) has announced the release of its latest documentary film, THE PRECIPICE, which explores the struggles faced by the Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe in Louisiana and the battles they have won. The film will be screened exclusively on Friday, May 19, at 7:00 p.m. at the Alliance Française of New Orleans.

THE PRECIPICE depicts the journey of the Pointe-au-Chien community to gain federal recognition and battle for educational equality. The film also highlights the community’s struggle against the impact of climate change, which is causing the gulf to claim increased land. Hurricane Ida, the category 4 storm, almost wiped out the community in 2021, leaving only seven homes habitable out of the 80-plus homes in lower Pointe-au-Chien.

The film documents the difficulties faced by the community, but it also reveals the battles they are beginning to win. The community remains hopeful, and the Pointe-Au-Chien Indian Tribe will open Louisiana’s first-ever French immersion school in August, serving a primarily Indigenous population. This school will allow them to reconnect the French language to their traditions and way of life.

LPB Senior Producer and filmmaker Ben Johnson stated, “The land is tied to their identity, and that part of their identity is literally washing away. Climate change is here, and the towns and cities impacted will only grow larger. This film offers viewers the stark reality of what happens to Pointe-au-Chenes, could happen to communities throughout the world. It’s in our best interest to make sure they succeed.”

The event is free and open to the public. A Q&A session with LPB Senior Producer and film director Ben Johnson will occur after the screening. Light refreshments will be offered to attendees.
