The Broad Theatre will screen Nobody May Come a documentary about local entertainer Valerie Sassyfras, for one night on January 19. A New Orleans native, Sassyfras grew a reputation as a beloved local performer and zydeco pop star. She has been featured on The Ellen Show, Ridiculousness on MTV and America’s Got Talent. In addition, she has opened and performed with many significant artists including Tank & The Bangas, Boyfriend, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Portugal. The Man and Marc Rebillet.
Directed by Ella Hatamian and Stiven Luka, the documentary chronicles her public and private life story. It was awarded Best Documentary at The Toronto Arthouse Film Festival in 2022 and Best Cinematography at the New Orleans Film Fest in 2020.
Movie critic Elizabeth Myles wrote about the film stating, “More than just a new-Orleans based entertainer, Sassyfras opens up to the camera as both a performer and a daughter, sister and widow, with her iconic song ‘Girl’s Night Out’ as the soundtrack to her own life. Her professional journey and unresolved familial ties intertwine in a lively and vulnerable portrait of being utterly oneself.”
