At One Eyed Jacks this Friday, October 14, a legitimately eccentric celebration will be taking place—the sort of event that could really only happen in New Orleans. It’s the Unofficial New Orleans Film Fest One Reel Super 8 Contest & Extravaganza, which I agree is difficult to get out in a single breath, and it’s being hosted by New Orleans film organization and Cox 4 TV show Timecode:nola.
The films entered in this contest abide by a set of throwback rules: their filmmakers were allotted one reel of super-8 film, were only allowed to edit in camera, and were not allowed to view the processed final product until the audience does. The films are silent, and will be accompanied by live piano music. The winner of the contest will be decided by popular ballot, with the audience encouraged to be lively in their cheers and jeers of the films.
The screening of the films will be guided by host Chris Lane, with a true New Orleans lineup of music before and after the screenings. Sets from DJ Black N Mild and rapper K. Gates will start the evening, followed by a singular bounce/brass mash-up brought by 5th Ward Weebie and the Hot 8 Brass Band after the films are shown.
As this will be the first time anyone (including the filmmakers) has seen the shorts in question, they may be clunkers or gems, unforgettable or impossible to forget. But the live nature of the event means entertainment value can be wrung from either. With plenty of danceable music bookending the filmed centerpiece, this night should offer plenty to engage your body and mind.
