Celebrate A Centennial Of Sin With Storyville Revisited

This weekend, New Orleans will be celebrating the end of “The District,” better known as Storyville. A century ago, New Orleans city administrators deemed the red-light district a blight on society and the sixteen blocks where prostitution, gambling, and various forms of illicit fun frolicked in broad daylight went dark. On Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8, the city will have a chance to relive The District’s glory days as a handful of trad-jazz musicians perform live for “Centennial of Sin: Storyville Revisited” at the Little Gem Saloon at 445 S. Rampart Street.

The music events are as follows:

Dr. Michael White
Friday, October 6
7p.m.

Patrick Mackey and The Hamkick Band
Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8
2p.m. – 4p.m.

Tim Laughlin Quartet
Saturday, October 7
7p.m.

Evan Christopher’s Clarinet Road: Storyville Centennial
Sunday, October 8
7p.m.

In addition to the performances, District Productions NOLA is putting on lectures and exhibits on jazz history. The full list of events kicks off at 11a.m. on October 6 with a jazz funeral and opening ceremony for The District, led by Jamie Wight and the Spirit of New Orleans Brass Band. Following that will be a wreath-laying ceremony and champagne toast officiated by historical district personalities including “Mayor of Storyville” Tom Anderson, joined by New Orleans City Councilmember Nadine Ramsey.

At 2p.m. on October 7 and October 8, there will be a Storyville Walking Tour with historian John McCusker about the early days of jazz and its link with the history of Storyville. Tickets for this event are $20 and can be purchased here.

Tickets to Centennial of Sin are $10 a day in advance or $15 a day at the door. Three-day passes are available in advance for $25.
