This spring, the Storycorps MobileBooth is coming to New Orleans from March 12 to April 8. The MobileBooth will be parked at Doerr Furniture, 914 Elysian Fields Avenue at Burgundy Street.
StoryCorps is a national nonprofit dedicated to preserving the stories and culture of American life through recording and archiving interviews with individuals across the country.
StoryCorps has conducted interviews across the country in the MobileBooth, an Airstream trailer outfitted with a recording studio.
The 40-minute interviews will take place between two friends who are comfortable enough with each other to talk freely. A trained StoryCorp guide will be present to facilitate and guide participants through the interview process.
At the end of the session, participants will be given an audio recording of their interview and, with their permission, a second copy will be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress for future generations to hear.
StoryCorps is partnering with WWNO 89.9 FM — New Orleans Public Radio, in order to broadcast selections of the local interviews. WWNO will air a special program around the event.
In 2010, StoryCorps collected a series of post-Katrina interviews chronicling the evacuation during the storm, the recovery since the storm, and the changes that have come along with it.
In order to offset operating costs, StoryCorps is suggesting a donation of $25 for each MobileBooth interview. However, the opportunity will still be available to those without the means to make a donation.
Reservations for recording will be available beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 26, and can be made by calling StoryCorps’ 24-hour toll-free reservation line at 1-800-850-4406, or by visiting storycorps.org.
