Indigenous Chef César Gachupin de Díos and his son Victor Gachupin Velasco will be bringing the Stone Soup from Oaxaca, Mexico to the Bywater bar, complementing the screening of “The Path of Stone Soup”, a documentary film co-produced by New Orleans based visual historian Sarah Borealis, featuring the Gachupin family designated by the Chinantec Council of Elders as cultural ambassadors for their native community.

“The way the seafood is poached in a matter of minutes gives it a perfect taste and texture, the individual ingredients maintain their individual flavors and there is something alchemical about the process,” Borealis told the People’s Guide to Mexico last year.

Visitors will receive a cooking demo, a screening of the film with Q&A, a bowl of stone soup, musical guests and drink specials, for $15 donation.

Proceeds will then support the Gachupin’s attendance at the International Institute of Indigenous Resource Management in Denver, CO, where “The Path of Stone Soup” is an official selection of the 2015 Indigenous Film and Arts Festival.

The Stone Soup Pop Up will be accompanied with an exhibition of Chinantec textiles and will be the first in a series of multi-media events centered around indigenous issues in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Vaughan’s Lounge is located at 4229 Dauphine. Reservations are currently available online.
