Dad rock’s finest are at it again. Fatherly favorites Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers are dusting off their instruments and hitting the road in May for a joint tour dubbed The Summer of Living Dangerously. The journey begins May 10 in Charlotte, NC and ends July 14 in Bethel, NY, stopping at New Orleans’ Smoothie King Center along the way on Tuesday, May 22.
The Summer of Living Dangerously will be Steely Dan’s first major tour since the death of founding member Walter Becker this past September, and the ensuing legal battle for control of the band and rights to its name between Donald Fagen (the band’s surviving founder) and Becker’s estate. “I would actually prefer to call it Donald Fagen and the Steely Dan Band or something like that,” Fagan said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. “To me, Steely Dan was just me and Walter.” Still, the marquee reads Steely Dan and Fagan and Co. will be sure to play the group’s timeless hits, from “Black Cow” to “Reelin’ in the Years.”
The Doobie Brothers, for their part, have stayed scandal free in recent years. Their most recent album, Southbound, reimagines some of their classic tracks as country songs, with help from the likes of Blake Shelton, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley and the Zac Brown Band.
Tickets for the tour will be on presale for Citi cardmembers starting Wednesday, Jan. 10, and available to the general public on Friday, Jan. 12 via Live Nation.
