There’s a couple good reasons to see Star & Dagger at Tipitina’s tonight, mainly that the band rocks up a storm and only plays New Orleans once in a blue moon. But here’s another reason: At every show on its current mini-tour, the band is giving away a limited-edition “casket bass” designed by cofounder and bassist, Sean Yseult.
Yseult first designed a version of the bass while touring with White Zombie in 1994 and working on their album Astro Creep: 2000. Schecter Guitar Research produced the current model, which features a mahogany body and 3-piece mahogany neck with an ebony fretboard. Inlays on the fretboard are mother of pearl stars with a star and dagger inlay at the 12th fret. The body is also embellished with gothic metal plates at the bridge and below the fretboard. It’s stocked with a pair of EMG 35P4 pickups with separate volume controls. Hardware includes Grover mini tuners and Schecter’s custom bridge that allows for thru-body or top load stringing. Or to put this in layperson’s terms, it kicks butt.
As does the band, whose debut full-length Tomorrowland Blues was released this summer. Yseult has been a New Orleans resident since shortly after White Zombie’s breakup; she’s also played garage-surf with Famous Monsters. In Star & Dagger she teams with singer Von Hesseling and guitarist Dava She Wolf (who was in the Cycle Sluts from Hell and wrote their cult classic, “I Wish You Were a Beer”). Big riffs and attitude abound.
Star & Dagger plays tonight (Thursday, August 1) at Tipitina’s (501 Napoleon Ave., 504-895-8477). R. Scully’s Rough 7 opens; doors are at 9pm and tickets are $12.
