Stan The Record Man Lewis’ Birthday Block Party on March 8

The Shreveport Regional Arts Council will celebrate the 87th birthday of Stan “The Record Man” Lewis as part of its monthly UNSCENE! series with an all-day block party at the 700 block of Texas Street in Shreveport on March 8, 2014.Stan The Record Man Lewis

Lewis, owner of Stan’s Record Shop in Shreveport, earned a Lifetime Achievement in Music Business award from OffBeat in 2002. He has recorded and released records for hundreds of musicians, including Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Bobby Rush, Lightnin’ Hopkins,  Big Joe Turner, and John Lee Hooker.

Lewis has helped generations of Louisiana musicians by co-writing, recording, publishing, distributing, and selling records. Many of those he has helped over the years will be on hand for the UNSCENE! block party.

Music historian and DJ Chris Brown will curate a contemporary tribute to the historic bands Lewis has helped. DJs who are renowned for promoting Lewis’ records and musicians will hold a panel discussion of the important role Lewis has played over the years, and contemporary bands who have been influenced by the music Lewis created and helped promote will perform.

In addition to the live performances and panel discussions, there will be several food trucks on hand in the Street Food Court, as well as an art market that includes a “Swap Shop” for records.

Live performances start at noon with Princess Monro, and continue throughout the day with sets from Betty Lewis and the Executives, Tres Bluebirds, and Ernie Johnson, among others. Bobby Rush will close out the day with a performance that begins at 9:15 p.m.
